If you plan to dine here, rule of thumb says try the clam chowder. You pretty much have no choice; it comes with every meal. And it's good -- thick, creamy and full of clams. Other signature items include the fried calamari, the seafood Isabella and the cioppino. Shellfish lovers will have a tough time choosing between the last two. An entire section of the menu is devoted to authentic Italian recipes. Then there are the Continental choices such as charbroiled New York steak and broiled salmon. The decor is distinctive and picturesque. Blue paint and the occasional blue light give the interior a dreamy underwater mood. However, one look out the bay windows proves that the restaurant is right at sea level. A few cozy booths are available, but twosomes will definitely want a table near the window. This establishment is under the same management as Fish Hopper Restaurant on Cannery Row. It's got the same mass appeal -- everyone from honeymooners to young families to seniors can feel comfortable dining here. -- Lena Katz

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

As a native, third generation, family from Monterey, we have been eating at Old Fisherman's Grotto for decades. The food is ALWAYS delicious and fresh. Although seafood and clam chowder is their specialty - you can also enjoy great steaks, salads, tasty deserts and cocktails!!!

I recently hosted a dinner at the Old Fisherman' Grotto and our experience Innovative menu selections - fresh/high quality food - service was super. Their house specialty - Clam Chowder - is the best we have ever tasted. The owner, Chris Shake, was on the premises the whole time and he and his staff did everything possible to make our party wonderful. Highly recommend for intimate or larger gatherings.

I've dined at The Old Fisherman's Wharf Grotto my entire life (50 years)- whenever we were near enough to Monterey to do so. It has always been awesome.

This is the best restaurant on the Wharf
By davidplang on 05/13/2003
Old Fisherman's Grotto is the 'hands down' best restaurant on the wharf! There is always someone from the family that owns it at the door, making sure everyone is happy. I eat there at least once a month, and I'm a Monterey local!
