The motto at the Bluebird Cafe is 'Shhh!' And that's just the response you'll get if you try to talk during one of the many singer-songwriter showcases or 'in the round' performances. Since 1982, the Bluebird has been known as the place to hear original country and acoustic music seven nights a week. Songwriters of all levels -- from beginners to established hit-makers -- perform on the small stage. Club owner Amy Kurland oversees a strict audition process for the Sunday showcases for new writers, so no matter what night you stop in, the music will probably be first rate. Even if you pay a cover charge at the door, be warned that the club also requires a $7 food and drink minimum (annoying if you're not hungry and/or don't drink alcohol). But the Bluebird does have a full menu with sandwiches, appetizers and other specialties. Many shows sell out fast, so consider making advance reservations if you decide to visit this legendary listening room. -- Heather Johnson

If you love music, this is the place! I came in with expectations, and they were exceeded. The baked brie appetizer is killer, and the music is even better. The crap you hear on the radio is nothing compared to what you hear when the actual writers perform the songs as they intended them to be performed. Amazing.
