While sushi bars are fairly common now in Nashville, the idea of eating raw seafood wasn't known to many just a decade or two ago. But Koto, tucked away in a slightly forbidding looking concrete building across from the convention center, has managed to not only survive since 1985, but to thrive throughout the years. About 20 tables and booths line up alongside the sushi bar, while Japanese screens and a bubbly fish tank give the place a serene air. Diners at Koto find that the real action is back along the extra-long sushi raw bar. Four to six chefs work the row nightly, chopping, slicing and rolling up colorful fresh sushi and sashimi selections. The bar is especially popular during lunch for solo diners. Not in the mood for sushi? Other menu specialties include multiple soba noodle bowls, fish, beef and chicken cutlets. Plum wine and Japanese beers are also served. -- Sandra Schulman

My first sushi
By Tastethecheese on 07/03/2008
Koto is a wonderful, family run place. I first tried sushi here what now seems like eons ago and still use it to measure other sushi joints by. Hadji is always great and he and his wife have been friendly to my family and I from day one. They always take suggestions and will make you something new as well as attend to your menu needs. The cross Japanese/Korean items are a nice addition. The standards are here as well as a few different items. I have had many rolls, soups, appetizers and entree's. All good. Fresh and reasonably priced. Everyone I have brought here, locals or out of towners enjoy the small, relaxed atmosphere and great food. Best crunchy shrimp roll there is.

Rockin!
By tastethecheese on 01/06/2004
This is the first real sushi bar that I dared to try. It has been many years now and still remains one of my favorite after trying others around the world. This is a cozy, family run place and it feels much like going over to someone's house. Usually quiet and quick, they have a great new menu offering many traditional items you find in bigger/fancier Japanese steak houses. The food is fresh and service is always friendly. Hadji is the chef and he always has a good story as well as being willing to whip you up a roll of your dreams. Just ask him to invent what you crave. Koto is known for its crunchy shrimp roll. Myself and many of my friends say there is no better anywhere! Everyone I have every brought here left w/ a full belly and good things to say so stop by and try. Rod
