You can always tell a great New Orleans bar by how much spontaneous dancing breaks out. In the case of F&M, it always takes place on top of the pool table in the main room, a tradition so ingrained in this excellent Uptown watering hole that a second pool table had to be brought in for customers who actually wanted to shoot stick on it. Arguably the city's finest college hangout, F&M does indeed feature a tropical patio with its own bar, and when the action gets crazy in front (as if often does), the patio can be an oasis of calm. The legendary jukebox, all-night grill (with alligator sausage fajitas) and legions of college girls have made it a haven for musicians just getting off from their gigs, as well as their audiences - lots of locals make it a tradition to stop here after witnessing a gig at nearby Tipitina's. Students and service-industry vets also find it a great place to unwind after a long day, or to "hook up" with a new friend at night. Not a meat market, but not exactly inhibited, either. When you find that new friend, take some photos in the photo booth before you slip into the night.

Best Dive Bar in America
By moose1566 on 04/22/2006
A collaboration of Tulane & Loyola students, off duty bartenders and waitresses, and laid back New Orleans locals makes this the best dive bar in america. The uptown bar scene is the only way to go and if your looking for the best possible time to meet people and let inhibitions go, go to F&M's

this is your typical college bar...at least when i've been there. dimly light, pretty grungy. on thursday nights it gets packed wall to wall with beautiful tulane and loyola wall from 2-4 in the morning. dont get there before 1 or you'll be the only one there. good crowd after midnight on weekends as well also, some great late night grub there...especially the cheese fries
