Not far from Tulane and Loyola universities and just a step off the streetcar line, this uptown hangout is about as basic a bar as one can find. Mainly catering to the wealthy student crowd, it's a place for drinking and shooting the breeze. With a chalet ceiling and cozy booths adorned with old-world lamps, Fat Harry's has the look of a British pub. There are a few video games, a rockin' jukebox and a poolroom in the back, as well as a grill that stays lit well into the night, serving up the usual bar fare, including good burgers and the best cheese fries likely to be found in the Big Easy. The atmosphere often changes as the day progresses and the bar is packed during football games. The outside tables provide a nice view of St. Charles during the daytime as well as the parades during Mardi Gras season. -- Craig Guillot
