There are any number of great places to hear blues and R&B in New Orleans, but the closest thing the city has to a real juke joint is located in Lee Circle, a part of town previously best known for a questionable hotel and a slightly less-questionable YMCA location. Like most other businesses encircling the giant statue of General Robert E. Lee, the Circle Bar is tiny. However, that only enhances the living-room intimacy, and that means you can feel even more like a snob once you relate your stories of seeing R.L. Burnside, Alex Chilton, or Toussaint McCall, all of whom frequent the slick but gritty watering hole. Even if there's no one on stage at present, you can console yourself with some excellent soul food, dollar cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon, and what may be the best R&B jukebox in the city. If those fail, order a house cocktail -- the 'Harry Tonic, Jr' (a shot of Herradura tequila and a tonic chaser). For a city like this one, that's saying quite a bit. -- Robert Fontenot, Jr.
