The resurrection of Commander's Palace, one of the city's oldest and finest restaurants (since 1880), has been a blessing to both the culinary and historical preservation segments of New Orleans society. Food is fine art in this town, in part because of institutions like this one and Brennan's; the famed Brennan family themselves restored this Garden District mainstay in 1974, and it's arguably surpassed even its namesake in reputation since that time. The neighborhood Commander's occupies is filled with luxurious mansions, and the atmosphere continues once you enter this Victorian-era structure. Expect impeccable service from the moment you set foot in the door. Dining in the garden is always a good way to maximize your visit; it's one of the finest and most secluded dining spots in the city. To revel in the Commander's experience, order the fabulous seven-course meal and let the chef handle it from there, or go on the weekend for their famed jazz brunch; this restaurant handles American, French, and Creole classics with equal aplomb. The Palace is also an outstanding choice for enjoying several of New Orleans' most famous drinks, including the Sazerac, the Ramos Gin Fizz, the Brandy Milk Punch, and the faux-Absinthe Herbsaint. Although the Mint Julep is primarily a Deep South drink, and not native to the city, it remains popular with tourists; this is one of the few establishments that'll make one for you without sniggering. Private rooms are also available for special occasions. --Robert Fontenot, Jr.

The bread pudding here is the best ever, nothing like it any where else. The food and service is great.

I have eaten at Commanders twice since it reopened. First Why try to make a venerable New Orleans Eatery look like a bad Las Vegas Restaurant? All the new kitschy elements meant to be fun but are just tacky. But this aside it all wouldn't matter if the food and service were up to snuff. The food has become just a assembly line of pre cooked tourist food and the waiter on both times was chatty about personal (his) details. This was disturbing as I was with clients. I have a business in New Orleans and I will not be recommending Commanders AT ALL to our customers. This makes me sad as it was always a sure fire hit. ********2nd review******** Much to my chagrin, a friend asked me to Brunch at commanders and I thought I should give it the benifit of the doubt. WELL.........It was awful. The steak was cold, they were out of several dishes on the already limited menu . Then we ordered 2 mint juleps. They came out and said they were sorry but they only had enough suryp to produce one more, not two! I think at a high end eatery they should not run out of anything and if they do, have a runner go out and get what you need to provide for your customer. SAD
