The resurrection of Commander's Palace, one of the city's oldest and finest restaurants (since 1880), has been a blessing to both the culinary and historical preservation segments of New Orleans society. Food is fine art in this town, in part because of institutions like this one and Brennan's; the famed Brennan family themselves restored this Garden District mainstay in 1974, and it's arguably surpassed even its namesake in reputation since that time. The neighborhood Commander's occupies is filled with luxurious mansions, and the atmosphere continues once you enter this Victorian-era structure. Expect impeccable service from the moment you set foot in the door. Dining in the garden is always a good way to maximize your visit; it's one of the finest and most secluded dining spots in the city. To revel in the Commander's experience, order the fabulous seven-course meal and let the chef handle it from there, or go on the weekend for their famed jazz brunch; this restaurant handles American, French, and Creole classics with equal aplomb. The Palace is also an outstanding choice for enjoying several of New Orleans' most famous drinks, including the Sazerac, the Ramos Gin Fizz, the Brandy Milk Punch, and the faux-Absinthe Herbsaint. Although the Mint Julep is primarily a Deep South drink, and not native to the city, it remains popular with tourists; this is one of the few establishments that'll make one for you without sniggering. Private rooms are also available for special occasions. --Robert Fontenot, Jr.

What a wonderful experience we had at Commander's Palace. We sat out in the courtyard under propane lanterns that kept us warm during a chilly November evening. The service was just impeccable. The food was outstanding. The waiters and staff were friendly and professional but definitely made our experience the best one in NOLA. The Sazarac was terrifically different! Everyone in our party of 4 loved this place and would go to NO again just to visit!
