Rate and Write a Review The general store-cum-sandwich shop, The Grocery sits in the bustling corner in the Garden District -- where St. Charles meets Sixth. This building has had dozens of commercial incarnations, but current proprietor Marcy McCall should probably settle in for the duration. Her loyal lunch crowd wouldn't have it any other way. McCall's warm, welcoming atmosphere and its central location has breed fiercely loyal customers. Like some of its older counterparts (Central Grocer in the French Quarter comes to mind), The Grocery is a culinary oasis in an urban jungle. Insiders know to eat on the outside tables and watch the streetcar rumble by. Open six days a week for lunch, the menu aims to please. Pressed sandwiches are rightly popular: from a semi-traditional muffuletta to an authentic Cuban sandwich. Traditional po-boys can be ordered pressed as well. Spicy shrimp and guacamole electrify what would otherwise be a mundane club sandwich. Grilled chicken with sun-dried tomato pesto and Creole mayonnaise puts a new spin on eating healthy. Feeling adventurous? Snap into the pork and alligator sausage-melt topped with grilled onions and peppers. The prices are low, but debit card holders beware: on the spot payment for sandwiches and sundries must be made with cash or personal checks. While youre draining the last drop of your creamy old-fashioned milkshake and wishing The Grocery could cater your next party, heres the good news they can! A full catering menu is available and The Grocery delivers.
