The po-boy -- New Orleans' signature sandwich on crusty French bread -- is prepared in rich variations in this humble 25-seat shop on upper Magazine. Po-boy specialists advocate Guy's fried catfish or shrimp. But many of the loyal clientele favor the flavors of the pork chop in gravy, fresh-fried chicken, hot sausage, roast beef or sliced steak with fried egg and mayo, all presented a la po-boy. Plate lunches, salads and daily specials such as white beans and ham with rice, mac and cheese, spaghetti with meatballs, and Salisbury steak are also cooked up in Guy's open kitchen. Lunchtime means a full house here, as business suits and uniforms stand shoulder to shoulder for fresh-cooked plates. Many will ask the innovative chef to improvise a new dish, some of which eventually become regular menu items. Expect a friendly atmosphere with lots of New Orleans character -- and characters. -- Michaela Morrissey

I go down to New Orleans a couple of times a year and this is always my first stop. The best PoBoy in town. And the staff is cool too, Blamba Killer Blamba!
