If there is one sandwich every New Orleanian agrees about it's Mother's Debris. Debris, for the uninitiated, is that flaky, juicy meat that falls off in small pieces as a large roast beef slow cooks. What some cooks might call expendable, Mother's has built into a decades-old institution. Those in the know order all the way with The Ferdi: debris on French bread combined with flavorful baked ham. And if you thought you knew all there is to know about local cuisine, you probably haven't had a bite of Mother's mac-and-cheese or mustard greens. Or if you thought all shrimp po-boys are created equally, you need just one bite of Mothers version to change your mind. To get a sense of the history of the place, simply read the writin' on the wall. From letters of adoration sent by the grateful dining masses to 1960s newspaper stories touting Mother's masterful ''spaghetti pie,'' you can spend hours tracing Mother's story. Hey, if it's good enough for Lenny Kravitz, Francis Ford Coppola and Dustin Hoffman, don't you think you need to find out what all the fuss is about? This is a take-your-time experience -- so be prepared to wait in line (outside) at peak hours.-

Pefect for the Masochistic
By bergimages on 03/06/2007
I work literally around the corner and have been there a few times for breakfast and lunch. The food in general is mediocre but I do LOVE the Early Bird breakfast special. It's nothing fancy- just good grits, biscuit, eggs, and sausage. The SERVICE is CONSISTENTLY THE WORST I've ever experienced. The employees are rude and I thought that if I'd become a regular, they'd be nice but they apparently do not discriminate. I've experienced waiting at the counter to be acknowledged for minutes while the servers talked to each other. While waiting for my food I overheard the loud cashier saying that her boyfriend walked in on her cheating and then he punched her in the face. But the general ATTITUDE from everybody is just unbearable even when I'm starving. Basically, the feeling I get is that Mother's doesn't care about providing a friendly, inviting atmosphere to compensate for the overpriced mediocre food because they don't have to. They have become synonymous with good ole' New Orleans cuisine and they can get away with it. They're number 3 on this AOL list and have 2 stars!!! That says it all. . .Try other places near by like Commerce or Welty's.

Not to be missed

Mother's is a scene for enlightened tourists and locals alike. Great po' boys, though every local says he knows a better, cheaper place. Don't miss the black ham, the etouffe omelete and the bread pudding. It's the first place I go when I get off the plane.

fiasco

Do not go to this restaurant. The "shrimp creole" consisted of 3 shrimp and a load of poorly cooked rice. The sides were elementary school cafeteria caliber and severely overpriced. My sandwich was served in a pool of strange cooking juices. The working staff does nothing to accomodate entering customers, who are forced to "figure it out themselves" where to sit, and how to go about getting their meals. They also won't bother to compensate customers for the mistakes mentioned before. Mother's doesn't even deserve half a star and they probably paid their famous patrons to put in a good word.
