It will probably take awhile before Avalon stops being referred to as the-club-formerly-known-as-Limelight, but such is the nature of legacy, even a tainted one. Steven Adelman and John Lyons have rechristened the soiled space with a heavenly new name, Avalon, which is also the moniker of their super clubs in Boston and Los Angeles. The duo prays that the ghosts of Limelight were exorcised during the spot's extensive makeover, which included the installation of three new proprietary sound systems; a garden area with a fiber-optic sky of blue points of light; and glowing Plexiglas floors near the entrance "so you already feel like a rock star," according to executive director Sorin Abraham. Interactive themes and performance are what the owners hope will set the club apart, with dancers on balconies and performers in wild costumes created by an in-house art and creative department. Live music will also be showcased, and management is covering all the bases by hitting up corporate event planners, soliciting benefits, film premieres, fashion shows and new music releases. For big shots there's the Spider Club, a 'celebrity-driven' club with a separate entrance, reservation policy and -- in a nod to the club's hedonistic past -- hand-and-foot wait service.
