Old John is gone, but his spirit lives on. Founded in 1854 by "Old John" McSorley, who modeled it after a saloon in his Irish hometown of Omagh, McSorley's is the oldest bar in New York City. Not much has changed since it was a watering hole for immigrant butchers, bricklayers and teamsters, except for John's motto -- "good ale, raw onions, no ladies" -- which had to be amended in 1970 after women were finally allowed to drink at this East Village landmark. Aged hardwood floors, tables and chairs make up the furniture. Sawdust is still spread out on the floor and swept up each night. And the urinals are Brobdingnagian. People don't come here for the pub food; they come for the ale, which is served in pairs and available in 'dark' or 'light.' Along with happy hour, they also come for the history, which, despite the recent pilgrimage of college kids and tourists, remains rich and rowdy. Read New Yorker writer Joseph Mitchell's definitive profile of the place before coming -- you'll feel like you fit right in.

BOAS
By jlangfordj on 02/16/2007
In college, a bunch of us formed a independent organization. We were all from the NY metropolitan area and we all were faliliar with McSorley's. We called ourselfs the Bermuda Onion and Ale Society (BOAS), This was due to the Bermuda Onions and ale that was tradtionally server there. We loved the fact that it was male only and when it was forced to coed we stopped going. However, McSorley's will always ring ture in our hearts.

We always make it over when we are in town. Mc's is a great place to pass the time and just hang out and meet new people. You just go in and find a place to sit whether you kow them or not. Just a Great Place and A lot of Fun.

Odd thing...this family
By snichun on 02/16/2007
Well, went there last year after a first time in 2000. Wanted to see the photos again for the family connection. I have to say the old man McSorley's face remains much like my own grandad's, who himself was a (or the) Mc Sorley of Gortin, Co Tyrone. Perhaps it is so, and perhaps not. Sort of spiny hairs thing for myself though, looking at the photos therein. I hope always tough that the McSorley common sense and respect shines always above the sad drums.

Great Memories!!
By gjm809 on 02/16/2007
My friends and I began going to McSorley's in 1969, at the ripe old age of 18. It was incredibly convenient for a drink before going over to the great Fillmore East for the late show, that began at 11:30 pm. Also great for the St. Patty's Day celebrations. Always great to bring in a crowd, take a round table in the back, and order a hundred light, and a hundred dark! Four of us went into to witness the historic first day of Ladies drinking at the establishment, August 1970. We had a few too many and called the NY Times, telling them a riot had broke out. They actually sent a reporter. We felt bad for him, and bought him several ales. through the years, we've gone in for old times sake. A great relaxed atmosphere for a week-day lunch.
