Even if you don't eat out, you've heard of Tavern on the Green. Or at the very least, you've strolled by its beautifully photogenic exterior and lush garden terrace on a moonlight stroll near Central Park's West Side. Since 1976, this fine-dining hotspot can all but epitomize the extremes of Manhattan eateries: grand, glitzy, with exquisitely prepared meals. With an enormous seating capacity of 1,500 in its six fantastic dining rooms (including the elaborately Victorian Crystal Pavilion, the crystal-chandeliered Crystal Room and the rustic-baroque Chestnut Room), Tavern has hosted everything from the Yankees' World Series Bash to Hollywood parties to big Broadway premieres. But forget the hoopla and try an intimate three-course prix-fixe lunch, which boasts a herb and mustard-crusted salmon, or the pre-theatre dinner menu, which includes glazed roast duck with sugar snap peas, preceded by escargot vol-au-vent or creamed spinach. The world-class wine list is 1,000 names long and the cellar is 50,000 bottles deep. And dessert? Let's just say Tavern pretty much invented the New York classic cheesecake. -- Yon Motskin

My husband & I (we've been married 25 1/2 years now) had our very 1st date @ Tavern on the Green in the Crystal Room - I saw Lucy Arnaz and I was SO impressed (I was 20!) the restaurant, the service, the food & presentation all were AMAZING and I have never forgotten that and always look forward to going when we are up in NYC (we live down south now) - 1st time I ever went was that date - January 26, 1981, and I wish I could be there now, and try to get there as often as possible! Moved from Connecticut in 1991, and haven't been back since :0(

If you want a truly great brunch or dinner and a memorable NY experience to take home with you try Cafe Des Artistes at One West 67th street. Historical, Great atmosphere, incredible decor, service and food. Escape from the Green Trap and treat yourself......and the prices are exceptional for what you get!

Tavern on The Green

Granted the location and the setting are to die for. However I recently took my son and I felt like we we're on a Cruise Ship they moved us in and out as fast as they could. I felt the food was cooked for a masive group of people it was as good as eating at a buffet. Nothing to write home about here. To have a wedding or retirement party there would be beautiful but the food is just OK.
