Even if you don't eat out, you've heard of Tavern on the Green. Or at the very least, you've strolled by its beautifully photogenic exterior and lush garden terrace on a moonlight stroll near Central Park's West Side. Since 1976, this fine-dining hotspot can all but epitomize the extremes of Manhattan eateries: grand, glitzy, with exquisitely prepared meals. With an enormous seating capacity of 1,500 in its six fantastic dining rooms (including the elaborately Victorian Crystal Pavilion, the crystal-chandeliered Crystal Room and the rustic-baroque Chestnut Room), Tavern has hosted everything from the Yankees' World Series Bash to Hollywood parties to big Broadway premieres. But forget the hoopla and try an intimate three-course prix-fixe lunch, which boasts a herb and mustard-crusted salmon, or the pre-theatre dinner menu, which includes glazed roast duck with sugar snap peas, preceded by escargot vol-au-vent or creamed spinach. The world-class wine list is 1,000 names long and the cellar is 50,000 bottles deep. And dessert? Let's just say Tavern pretty much invented the New York classic cheesecake. -- Yon Motskin

WOW! 9-21-07
By trisha11265 on 09/30/2007
During a recent visit to New York, I treated my family to dinner at the Tavern. The food and service were wonderful! While dinner was very expensive, it was worth every dime. The atmosphere was magical, and the gardens just beautiful. You have to do this once in your life! It took me twenty years to finally get there, and it was worth the wait. We started out with shrimp cocktai, then had Prime Rib . It was tender and delicious, the potatoes were mashed just right and the green beans perfectly seasoned and cooked. I only wish we all had room for dessert!

Careful using the Valet Parkin
By wcoll8374 on 08/18/2007
The resterrant is finr ,BUT the parking valet backed my vehicle in a spot and damaged a hitched segway unit ..and later tried to say I arrived with it damaged ...We showed him the damage and the spot that he pulled the vehicle from and even the granite post he had backed into..then he claims he pulled it out of a diffeant spot ..What alier we were watching him..And he still maintained we didn't know what we were talking about ..A nice evening ruined by a lying son of a Bit--...So try to park elsewhere ..All he had to say was he was sorry and we would of let it go at that ..As I can and did repair the damage myself at very small cost

Excellent Service
By dettelyn on 08/13/2007
When I arrived I was greeted by a very polite door man. My worst experience was the two young girls that took my name. They were more interested in chatting about their dating experience the night before, and saying negative things about a previous customer. My female waiter was profession, knowledge about the food and how it was prepared, knew the wine list and suggested not only an excellent wine, but a dinner special that was out of this world. I never had to ask for more water or coffee. My dining experience was fabulous. When I left the restaurant the same door man walked me to a cab. I visit New York City several times a year and always go to Tavern at least once during each trip. Thank you for a great experience.

Food NOT worth the price!!!!
By m21amm on 07/08/2007
My boyfriend and I went to Tavern on the Green on 7/5/07 for dinner before heading out to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. Even though we read all the bad reviews, I still wanted to try it at least once. We had the pre-theatre dinner and it was NOT good. Although it sounded tasty on the menu, it was a BIG disappointment. They didn't even seat us in the pretty area that you see in the pictures. I hated the room they sat us in. But anyway, that is beside the point. The point is the food and service was not worth the price. Our bill came out to over $100 and we didn't even order alcoholic drinks. If you want to try it, just to say "I've been there, done that," then go ahead but don't have high expectations.
