Even if you don't eat out, you've heard of Tavern on the Green. Or at the very least, you've strolled by its beautifully photogenic exterior and lush garden terrace on a moonlight stroll near Central Park's West Side. Since 1976, this fine-dining hotspot can all but epitomize the extremes of Manhattan eateries: grand, glitzy, with exquisitely prepared meals. With an enormous seating capacity of 1,500 in its six fantastic dining rooms (including the elaborately Victorian Crystal Pavilion, the crystal-chandeliered Crystal Room and the rustic-baroque Chestnut Room), Tavern has hosted everything from the Yankees' World Series Bash to Hollywood parties to big Broadway premieres. But forget the hoopla and try an intimate three-course prix-fixe lunch, which boasts a herb and mustard-crusted salmon, or the pre-theatre dinner menu, which includes glazed roast duck with sugar snap peas, preceded by escargot vol-au-vent or creamed spinach. The world-class wine list is 1,000 names long and the cellar is 50,000 bottles deep. And dessert? Let's just say Tavern pretty much invented the New York classic cheesecake. -- Yon Motskin

Nothing special and not worth the money
By Moongazzer102 on 06/28/2008
My husband surprised me for Valentine's Day and planned a nice dinner at Tavern on the Green (well the Saturday after Valentine's Day). I had expected to be seated somewhere with a nice view, but was instead seated in a room I have named their "Winter Room" due to the all the decor with winter theme. The staff was "ok", the service was good but nothing exceptional. We enjoyed the food but I have had better food at less expensive restaurants. Although I was aware of the price ranges of the various menu items, I was highly disappointed when I ordered a smoked salmon appetizer. There was literally a tiny, maybe a 1 1/2 inch piece of salmon with some greens and the appetizer cost nearly $20. I expect some food on my plate for an appetizer that costs that much money! However, we both ordered prime rib that was humungous and worth the price in terms of quantity. Other than to say we went to Tavern on the Green, our experience was nothing special and don't plan to return anytime soon. You're paying for the name and the view you hope to get.

Beautiful, but overrated, bad service, bad food and overall BAD
By Tire Girly on 06/12/2008
First of all, I have to say this was one the most beautiful places I have ever eaten. That taken care of, the waiters were VERY rude and slow and I swear the food tasted like Chef Boy Ar Dee. Disgusting and overpriced.. Will never go there again. Seriously, I had the ravioli and it tasted (and probably came) like it came from a can. I could not have hated it more.
