Even if you don't eat out, you've heard of Tavern on the Green. Or at the very least, you've strolled by its beautifully photogenic exterior and lush garden terrace on a moonlight stroll near Central Park's West Side. Since 1976, this fine-dining hotspot can all but epitomize the extremes of Manhattan eateries: grand, glitzy, with exquisitely prepared meals. With an enormous seating capacity of 1,500 in its six fantastic dining rooms (including the elaborately Victorian Crystal Pavilion, the crystal-chandeliered Crystal Room and the rustic-baroque Chestnut Room), Tavern has hosted everything from the Yankees' World Series Bash to Hollywood parties to big Broadway premieres. But forget the hoopla and try an intimate three-course prix-fixe lunch, which boasts a herb and mustard-crusted salmon, or the pre-theatre dinner menu, which includes glazed roast duck with sugar snap peas, preceded by escargot vol-au-vent or creamed spinach. The world-class wine list is 1,000 names long and the cellar is 50,000 bottles deep. And dessert? Let's just say Tavern pretty much invented the New York classic cheesecake. -- Yon Motskin

Not worth the money
By rjdcascadia on 07/17/2008
For many years I looked forward to dining at this establishment should I ever find myself in New York City. In June 2008 I finally got there and it was high on my list. Sorry to say to was a complete disappointment. The prawn cocktail starter was good but those come out of a box. The chicken entree' was one step below Shake "n Bake. The dessert was obviously from some neighborhood bakery and the service was slow and unfocused even though we were pre-theatre and the restaurant was not busy. The bill was $256.58 with tip for three of us for dinner. Not one of us was impressed. We ate at other restaurants in Manhattan for less than this and got far better food and service. Don't waste your time and money on this pretentious restaurant living on some past glories.

Can't wait dined here 10 years ago with clients and now returning to meet up with longterm friends that alll lived and worked out of New York over the last 25 years, we have chose Tavern On The Green as it epitomises the spirit, the aptmoshere and the service of a New York reunion, we have all dined our way around the world so I know we will not be disapointed, great to arrive by horse and carriage after a trip around Central Park!!!
