The Ameritania Hotel, located at Broadway and 54th Street, just steps away from the Broadway theater district (and right around the corner the Ed Sullivan Theater, where The Late Show With David Letterman is taped), is part of New York's seemingly endless supply of new or recently renovated boutique hotels. But it has something many of its ilk do not: an actual sense of homey comfort beneath its |high tech| polished exterior. True, it has the chic furniture, the sleek monochrome style, the unstinting sense of cleanliness. But it also offers rooms with large, sunny windows, and if you're lucky, you may even get one that offers an actual view. What's more, the hotel's 207 guest rooms, though not large, are considerably bigger than the artful closets that pass for rooms in some of the other boutique hotels. And its modern bathrooms are large and well appointed, too. And if you snag one of the hotel's special weekend rates, you'll really feel like you're getting a bargain. -- Amy Reiter
