Rate and Write a Review A Diane Von Furstenberg here, a Kennedy or Cuomo there. The streaming parade of famous and infamous names and faces visiting and living at the Carlyle can be titillating, intimidating, and astonishing. Like queen bees at a honeycomb convention, the ego-centric guests and residents somehow congregate peacefully at this quintessentially genteel Upper East Side hotel, its pyramid-shaped peak piercing the skyline from its Madison Avenue perch. Offering 191 rooms -- from demure lower-floor accommodations for $295 nightly to $2,400 per night apartments presenting life-altering views of Central Park -- Mark Hampton's interiors are devoid of any tackiness. That esthetic also applies to the downstairs restaurant, where fruit baskets, flower arrangements, and oil paintings emphasize serenity over urbanity, humanity over insanity. Over yonder is the famous Bemelman's Bar with its renowned murals still intact, as well as the Cafe Carlyle, where Bobby Short, Eartha Kitt, and various cabaret stars regularly twinkle under the moonlight.--Leonard Jacobs
