Hard to find and designed like a speakeasy, this dark cocktail lounge generated a vat of buzz before opening simply for its bartenders, a roster of master mixologists from places like Pegu Club. Unlike Milk N' Honey, this moody Alphabet City bar has its phone number listed, accepts reservations before nightfall, and doesn't require a secret handshake and coded Freemason phrase to enter its foreboding doors. If you even slightly care about your drink beyond the fact that it's wet, this place is for you. Who else adds a dash of angostura bitters to their Fancy Free and finishes it with a flaming twist? A bonded applejack brandy-based Wicked Kiss? A Hot Buttered Rum. There's food - St. Jacques bay scallops, bacon-wrapped filet mignon - but who cares. The place will literally leave you feeling disoriented, and it's not just the expert, historic/creative drinks - are those hardwood floors on the ceiling?
