This long, narrow bar is an Upper West Side staple whose Guinness pints have fueled a fair share of hookups, breakups, fights, reunions and controlled-substance use. During the day, a shaft of light from the street streams in and you can see the ghosts of a thousand drunken nights cast on the tiled floor, but the afternoon regulars here tend not to be observant types. After dark, the bar fills with college kids and strange characters -- about the usual crowd for a good dive bar. The wood paneling imparts a faintly unsavory vibe, like a refinished basement from a 1970s horror film, or a Fiona Apple video. The open back room allows for debauchery by larger groups.

A classic. One of thelast few pubs with a classic pint glass. Best draft beer in New York. Its Guiness will save you a trip back to Ireland in search of quality.

A great old fashioned pub, the beers potent and bar staff superb. When it gets going you better hold on tight.
