The original Filene's Basement, located, oddly enough, under the original Filene's department store in Boston, was an outlet for clothes and other items that didn't sell upstairs. Today, Filene's Basement is a chain of off-price retailers with no official connection to Filene's (both were sold to separate companies). The spirit, however, remains the same. The store is filled with name-brand items at nosedive discounts. You can find clothing by Calvin Klein and Tommy Hillfiger, shoes by Nike and Steve Madden, cookware by Calphalon and All Clad, as well as wedding dresses, tuxedoes, leather jackets and gold jewelry. Discounts range anywhere from 10 to 90 percent, which means you can find a leather jacket for $40, a copper saucepan for $60 or a pair of silk pajamas for $10. Inventory changes often, so keep checking back if you're looking for something specific. Only drawback? You need patience to pick through all the racks of clothing and other products. But when you find a cashmere sweater for $35, it's well worth it. -- Keri Fisher
