In its previous incarnation, the Iridium occupied a claustrophobic, visually-cluttered basement room near Lincoln Center. A move to Times Square in the summer of 2001 signaled a major improvement -- the new digs are spacious, sleek and subtle, and much of the stuffiness of seasons past seems to have evaporated. Yes, the Iridium is still a tourist destination; it's situated below Ellen's Stardust Diner and adjacent to the Winter Garden, so you're likely to encounter map-wielding families on the sidewalk outside. But the club itself is mercifully devoid of commercial trappings. Sightlines are clear throughout the club, offering unobstructed views of a well-sized, elevated stage. Tables are spaced comfortably apart, and service is unfailingly courteous. A generous wine and drink list accompanies the club's American cuisine; the menu is on the pricey side but quality is well above par. Most importantly, the focus here is on the music. Given the talent booked here, it's no wonder this has become one of the prime jazz destinations in the city. -- Nate Chinen
