In ShortButcher paper covers the tables and Broadway memorabilia cover the exposed brick walls at this Theater District favorite. In warm weather, cool breezes drift in from the open doors that face 46th Street. On the menu, reliable American tavern fare mixes with choices like a spicy Portuguese blood sausage, Greek salad, grilled portabello mushroom and quesadillas. The mashed potatoes are particularly good; ditto for the highly rated burgers.

Celebrity sightings with broadway bomb nostalgia
By MMerry40 on 03/10/2009
The food has always been good at Joe Allen for me and my friends. Joe Allen has my favorite barstool with yummy martinis and an occasional celebrity strolling by in a low keyed casual setting where no one will bother them...Nathan Lane, Al Pacino, Tom Hanks, etc. Can't wait to go back!

OUR FAVORITE

We have eaten there many times. Will continue to do so. Always take our out of town guests when we are in the theater district. It has a small town feeling even though it's mid-manhattan. We have eaten at the bar when the restautant is filled, and enjoyed that experience.

Downhill

Joe Allen is a great place to go with friends and schmooze, but the food has gone downhill over the last few years. It's not bad, just not terribly good, to the point of being bland.
