Famous for showcasing acts like Billie Holiday in its Zebra Room, and attracting regulars like Isaac Hayes, James Baldwin and Malcolm X, Lenox Lounge has survived both urban decay and urban renewal. Opened in 1939 and refurbished after a shaky period in the '80s, it has regained its Art Deco splendor, and continues to entertain an interesting mix of dressy locals -- who look cinematic in the loveseat-sized banquettes -- a smattering of tourists here for the music, and workaday regulars stopping by in the afternoon for their usual drinks and plate of porgy and grits. Its classic style has attracted a host of film shoots, including 'Dead Presidents,' 'White Lies,' and 'Bullet.' But what remains most impressive about this Harlem haunt is its incredible staying power. -- Dan Glass
