Pearl River has been granted a permanent place in the shopping world of every good New York hipster. The once-forbidding store (would you have shouldered your way up a poorly-lit flight of narrow stairs and through a creepy plastic flap to buy bundles of really great chopsticks unless somebody had taken you?) is now filled with more stylists, graphic designers and SoHo bohos than the Film Forum during a Charbol festival. No matter, as Pearl River still has a massive selection of dirt-cheap imported dinnerware, cooking toys, clothes, medicinal herbs, foodstuffs and knickknacks. This is where you can get the same gorgeous glass-baked tea sets, beaded plastic slippers and notepads emblazoned with seductive faces from vintage Chinese ads as those trendy stores just a few blocks away, only here it's half the price.
