The popular summer hot dog cart operated in Madison Park by NYC restaurant impresario Danny Meyer has grown into a three-season blockbuster. In addition to the famous Chicago-style hot dogs, Shake Shack offers chocolate and vanilla frozen custard, burgers and fries, just in case anyone was in danger of eating healthily. While you won't find shelter from the elements at this kiosk in the park, you will find the difference in taste between frozen custard and its nearest cousin, soft-serve ice cream. The custard is made with egg yolks in addition to ice cream's ingredients: milk or cream, sugar and flavoring. Cold-dessert aficionados swear by frozen custard, and with Mister Softee under attack for noise pollution, it's not hard to imagine that the line for service at Shake Shack will snake out the park past several lonely ice cream trucks.

I rated the Shake Shack 5 stars simply because of one thing...they serve Chicago-style hot dogs. Funny, if Chicago-style hot dogs are so great, how come no hot dog eatery in Chicago made the top ten? I guess the poll was biased.

Best Hot Dogs in NYC

Now that Nathan's has been in a steady decline year after year, it's the Shake Shack dogs in beautiful Madison Square Park that are tops. And the frozen custard tastes the way I remember it from my childhood trips to amusement parks.

Try Walters in Mamaroneck for the best hot dog in the entire state.
