You don't have to spend much time in one of TJ Maxx's more than 600 stores before the key word strikes you: Affordable. You'll find brand-name apparel, home furnishings and much more at 20 percent to 60 percent below department store prices. Clearance racks help your shopping dollars go even further. And with new stock constantly arriving, there's always something of interest to see. Stores are attractive and functional with plenty of changing rooms, but without expensive frills to drive costs up.About half the store is women's apparel and accessories, from names such as Kenneth Cole and Liz Claiborne. Men will also find a good selection of everyday items -- most of them under $30 -- from names like Tommy Hilfiger. The children's department includes toys and toddler clothing in addition to boys' and girls' apparel. Home accessories are aplenty, if haphazardly displayed, and include all manner of items, from ceramic serving dishes and seven-dollar hand-painted stemware to towels and blankets. Impulse buys such as picture frames, stuffed toys and seasonal items are next to check-out stations.
