O'Connor's doesn't look the same without the low, blue cigarette haze gathering just above the bar. It doesn't smell the same either. A panoply of aromas once masked by smoldering tobacco now assaults the senses. But O'Connor's still plays the same part it always has -- smoke or no smoke. It's a comfortable, careworn dive where the frugal dipsomaniac can get a load on cheap. The long bar encourages wide-open conversation, while the booths are more suitable for plotting revolution, staging lovers' quarrels and founding upstart magazines. O'Connor's is well past the point of being discovered -- and indeed the bar wears its various "Best Of New York" plaques unabashedly. The crowd is a mix of professional drinkers, neighborhood types and hipsters who make the trip for the low prices and the seamy vibe. Despite the dicey exterior, the rough-hewn decor (what is that back room for, anyway?) and the iffy climate control, O'Connor's is a pleasant place to have a drink and not nearly as tough as it looks. -- Adam Mazmanian

back in the day

"O--C 's" is what we used to call it back in the days of Pat and Charlie, whom I miss dearly. Nothing beat their banter and love of the customer more consistently. I met my wife in that place. It can, and probably always will, draw and eclectic clientele. Have you ever been in a place in which you could be sitting between a butcher ( in a full bloody smock) and a writer for the New York Times (in an Italian suit) and realize that your presense was interupting their argument about whether the stock market rise or fall will increase or decrease the cost of chicken feed in congress? THEN only to realize that they have know each other for years and their long lasting "conversations" were designed to allow them a chance to have another beer. "O--C's" is not only a great place to enjoy an in-expensive beer but also a great place to cross culture. The haves and have nots can enjoy the company of each other without the airs and pretenses of being above or below one another. P.S. The juke box is pretty good
