Fed up with the kaleidoscopic Manhattan multiplex, countless New Yorkers make the weekly pilgrimage to BAM Rose Cinema in Fort Greene. This grand, elegant wing of the revered Brooklyn Academy of Music was erected in 1998 and has since become one of the major destinations for first-run, repertory and special-event film screenings. Equipped with state-of-the-art sound and comfortable seating, BAM Rose Cinemas boasts four very large screens. One is devoted to BAMcinematek, a year-round program that showcases world and ethnic cinema through events such as the African Film Festival and Brooklyn Jewish Film Festival, as well as Cinema Chat panels with accomplished filmmakers, actors and writers. It also screens Hollywood classics and rare prints. The BAM Cinema Club, co-chaired by actor Steve Buscemi, gives discounts and exclusive access to parties, galas and members-only screenings. From indie auteurs to international masters, this is the place for mature movie people who want to be on the inside.
