But like it or not, all roads that are cured, pickled and soaked in brine eventually lead to this historic Jewish deli on the Upper West Side. After decades in the business, the place remains packed with tourists and popular with locals. The menu is a sprawling smorgasbord of shtetl-era delights, including blintzes, cheesecakes and knishes, but the stuff of legend is still the sizable sandwiches. Piled sky-high by what can only be a very hefty butcher, the homage sandwiches include eye-openers like Carnegie Haul (triple decker pastrami, tongue, salami, Indian relish), Fifty Ways to Love Your Liver (chopped liver, egg, tomato, lettuce, onion) and The Woody Allen (a corned beef/pastrami combo which probably has more meat than the comedian himself). The prices are hefty, too, but nothing compared to the bulge in your stomach on the way out.
