Rate and Write a Review In 1919, six suffragettes hired the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White to design a building for public debates, concerts and movies. In 1921, Town Hall resulted -- a modest 1,495-seat space that's seen it all. Indeed, from contraception advocate Margaret Sanger being arrested on stage to contralto Marian Anderson making her New York debut to Eleanor Roosevelt defending the New Deal, history tells the Town Hall story. Outside, an engraved limestone plaque extols political activism; inside, organ grills flank the stage. Thanks to a cantilevered balcony, the longtime Town Hall motto, "not a bad seat in the house," also happens to be the truth.
