Rate and Write a Review A small scale American Zoetrope for downtown New Yorkers, the Pioneer Theater is cinephile central in the East Village. Opened in 2000, the art house is best known for its foreign fare, local independent features and short film slam screenings. Housed in the lower depths of a popular pizzeria, the theater manages to mix big screen magic with living room comfort. Laid back and old school, it seats about 100 people. The screen is much smaller than multiplex size, but it's equipped with Dolby sound and you likely won't have to deal with rambunctious families of eight expecting 'Jurassic Park 6.' Instead, even money says that the person sitting next to you will be a filmmaker, film student or historian.
