Hungry (and sometimes rabid-looking) Upper West Siders have long been satisfying their every Jewish-food craving at the self-proclaimed "Sturgeon King." The red-printed sign, reminiscent of a simpler time, beckons patrons into its dated narrow dining room with faux wood-grain wall paneling and Formica tables packed in tightly together. Offerings include cheese blintzes, the PLT (grilled pastrami, lettuce, and tomato on rye toast), corned beef and tongue (pickled on the premises), gefelte fish with Gold's horseradish, and fried kreplach with sauteed onions -- to name only a few. But what really draws eager diners in are the lox and smoked fish-based items, such as smoked sturgeon scrambled with eggs and onion, Nova Scotia lox served with two bagels or bialys, cream cheese, tomato, onion and potato salad or coleslaw, and the whitefish salad sandwich. With a take-out counter smartly located near the front door, it's a cinch to get your order to go and throw it all back with some fresh-squeezed OJ and babka in front of the tube or on a grassy patch in the park. -- Amanda Dorato

Not being mean, just honest
By Nklsmith on 07/25/2008
Just made a trip to BG and while I loved the old style look and feel, I have to agree about the service both from the waiter, busser and owner. The Cornbeef was delicious while small. The busser pretty much slung glasses of water at us and laid them all on one corner of the table for us to arrange. The waiter told us if someone came in with 4 people, we would have to move. The owner was on the phone when we went to pay. Took my credit card, kept on talking, put the phone down long enough to tell me if it were a weekend, he wouldn't accept a credit card. Went back to talking while I was waiting to sign the ticket. He put down the phone and asked what I wanted, I told him to sign his ticket. Never said a word, just handed me the ticket and went back to the phone. Also didn't want to handle the tip like 99% of all restaurants do and made me tell him how much tip I was giving, handed me cash out of the drawer. I'm a visitor and never subscribe to the "New Yorkers are all rude" theory. I find them to be normal and nice...

A Mixed Bag

The smoked fish and bagels are sublime. Other food good, but the place itself is a mess!

The miserable reviews are out
By dadbear321 on 02/01/2007
Seems too many mean peopel are out tonight.....Could be they are not into Jewish Delis....and such food. Then stay home. The place is a throwback to old times...the "mess" is the atomospher and fun. To some tiny portions are anything under a three foot sandwhich, so they can take home half or more and eat the rest for two days. Raunchy is hardly the word...Look it up in the dictionary please. And if you want service like the Waldorf....go to the waldorf...and if your in a hurry...Then go to MAc Donals..and stop kvetching.

Whatever!

This place was awsome. As a first timer my friend and I were quite happy with the expierience there. When we arrived the place was jam packed but we only waited about 5 minutes where it looked like 30 minutes for a table! We ordered the classic smoked sturgeon scrambled eggs with lox and it was to die for! As for the portions they were pretty good considering our plate came with a bagel and tons of cream cheese! I left this place very full. As for the service our waiter was super nice despite news I had heard how rude NYC waiters are. Even after we told him we were from out of town he made sure we happy with our meals. No way was the service terrible. I've had way worse in NYC! You can't go to NYC and not eat breakfast here!
