Lalo isn't the type of cafe for loitering or poetic reflection over a few cigarettes. People come here for dessert -- any and all kinds of desserts -- a veritable encyclopedic selection of desserts. Hazelnut mousse with Frangelico, apple walnut flan, 27 kinds of cheesecakes, 18 kinds of tarts, 26 varieties of pies -- it's staggering. There is more to the menu however, such as connoisseur cheese plates served with quince preserve and dried fig-almond cake, salads, and unusual sandwiches such as cauliflower, but the bright-as-an-ice-cream-parlor room makes one think dessert and fancy coffees. You'd never expect that one of their menus contains a larger variety of liquors than most bars, and of course, their frozen drinks are masterfully concocted. Framed Cappielo advertising prints cover the brick walls, the fixtures sparkle and shine, and there's not a wobbly table in the place. The picturesque interior and landmark status won it as a location in the film 'You've Got Mail,' which is appropriate as it is probably one of the most popular date spots in the neighborhood. On peak nights expect a wait, but there are benches and tiled patio chairs outside, set under Christmas light-entwined trees. -- Dan Glass

Desserts To Die For!

If you love chocolate try their triple mousse ecstasy or their chocolate indulgence. Wash it down with a Lalo paradise and you will be on the moon.

Well....

I went here with my date after dinner at the Indian place on 87th and Amsterdam (which I highly recommend), and at first the place looked beautiful, with the lit trees outside and the big windows in the front. We get in and it is very crowded, which I am usually alright with. However, we notice that the music playing is really bad. 90's pop music is not exactly fitting for the desired ambiance. We waited to be seated, and waited again a rather long time for a waitress to even notice us. The waitresses are all about 16 and pretty, and rather flaky. Not the type of waitresses you ask to recommend a wine, or anything else for that matter. We wanted to get the chocolate fondue, but they had run out of the chocolate for that. We then decided on one of the chocolate mousses, with some whipped cream and berries on the side (berries were extra). It was absolutely delicious, and the mocha cappucino was good too, even though it had way too much chocolate in it. Basically, great dessert, great looks, horrible music (too loud also), and horrible service. If you dont mind the noise or the service issues, then go here and enjoy.

Love this place! OK, so you might wait for a little while if it's busy--it's worth it. Try the Belgian waffles...they come with cinnamon whipped cream--de-lish!!

A bit of a tight squeeze, and the service could've been better, but the desserts and coffee more than made up for it.
