Carmine's simple and very popular concept is to serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast - which means large portions of home-style antipasti, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on large platters designed for sharing. And when we say large, we mean large. An entree here could easily feed three to four average eaters. Located in a sprawling, former grand ballroom on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this is the original Carmines. Designed by Peter Niemitz, the interiors evoke the images of the quintessential New York restaurant. With elements and details from the 1920s to the 1940s, the restaurant has the look and feel of a place that has been around for much longer than it's 1990 opening. If you are in the market for freshly prepared family style Italian food that is served in huge portions at reasonable prices, this is the place for you.

Huge servings! Try their pizza bread, baked clams, calamari, and anyone of their meals for the day including their salad of the day. Prepare to eat, so bring company.

don't even try bringing a lot of people there, unless you give them a huge tip just to hold a table for 15! won't give a reservation for 8 pm but will for 7:30 even though told them it takes more than that to travel from long island to there. idiots working there. hopefully the other carmines will be better

take me out to the ballgame?

I agree that the noise in the place is louder than yankee stadium in the bottom of the ninth with a tied scroe and bases loaded. the hostess, manager are extremely obnoxious. Expect New york rudeness at its worse. I have been here many, many times. Went Christmas Day. Our waiter was v. good but it is hit and miss. Once the waiter brought out the appetizer, pasta and entree all at once. Talk about the bum's rush! When I asked him to serve it by course he complained it was too late and he would bring it back to the kitchen and let it sit there. What an attitude. Was told had to change tables unless I could eat my three course meal in an hour. What? the pasta dishes are good (except the clams as other reviewer noted - you could choke on them- canned clam sauce is better). Their "formula" is clear - fill you up on large platters of cheap pasta and skimp on the entrees where the meat is. A platter of pasta at $25 is not cheap and Chicken with lemon at $25 really is a serving for two - so how cheap is it really? The calamari is filled with "spindles". But the food is the good part! atmosphere is terrible - no menus means you have to strain to read wall menus. Of course that means you have to get up and down since you can't always see them> How much would menus cost ? The You are crammed onto tables that are too small and banged and pushed. Its like eating in a gym. The place certainly does encourage slovenly dress. Watch your head while eating because I experienced the same thing with tables and chairs bumping into you and being carried. The bathrooms are too small and there are long lines of women waiting to get in whileyou are trying to eat. The place is seedy - as cheap as it can be. If you like going out to eat in a gym with loud noise and obnoxious staff and you like being knocked around go to Carmines. Buy two boxes of pasta and learn how to make a good sauce and stay home. Its BETTER than this!
