There will never be a consensus amongst corned beef connoisseurs as to who's truly tops in New York. But like it or not, all roads that are cured, pickled and soaked in brine eventually lead to this historic Jewish deli on the Upper West Side. After decades in the business, the place remains packed with tourists and popular with locals. The menu is a sprawling smorgasbord of shtetl-era delights, including blintzes, cheesecakes and knishes, but the stuff of legend is still the sizable sandwiches. Piled sky-high by what can only be a very hefty butcher, the homage sandwiches include eye-openers like Carnegie Haul (triple decker pastrami, tongue, salami, Indian relish), Fifty Ways to Love Your Liver (chopped liver, egg, tomato, lettuce, onion) and The Woody Allen (a corned beef/pastrami combo which probably has more meat than the comedian himself). The prices are hefty, too, but nothing compared to the bulge in your stomach on the way out.

Best Cheesecake ever!
By Queenofthehwy72 on 01/07/2009
My family and I always get cheesecake at Carnegie. It is by FAR the BEST we have ever eaten--and that is a consensus among the five of us. It beats Juniors by miles. Try it--you will LOVE it. Their pastrami sandwich is great too, if over priced. It is enough to feed four though, so take that into consideration--and enjoy! BTW, the staff have always been friendly despite what others have said--at least that has been our experience whenever we have been there.

so so

My daughter and I split a Woody Allen and we still had half left over. The meat was a little dry but it was ok. We were seated with a party of 6 as they let no seat go unfilled. We wanted to get a dessert to go and you have to go to a couple different counters for that which is confusing. I think Katz's is much better.

Quantity is great, but quality is questionable
By CMA Is My Biz on 07/31/2008
I have eatenat The Carnagie deli for many years and I must say that it has been going down the drain for the past few years. The service is lousy, the place is way too noisy, and they are very stingy with giving pickles. I live in CT, and will not go there again. They are way too expensive for what they serve. And cash only, lol. IRS take note of that place.
