If you had to persuade the proverbial Martian that Staten Island really is a part of New York City, you might want to take him to Carol's, a homey but elegant spot where the cuisine aspires to Manhattan standards of sophistication. An Island institution since 1972, the restaurant offers a four-course prix-fixe dinner, by reservation only, on Wednesday through Saturday nights. The winningly eclectic menu includes a wild game appetizer plate, fusilli with pesto sauce and grilled chicken, orecchiette with lobster, and pecan-encrusted chicken with chili butter. Eponymous owner Carol Frazzetta, a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu and The Culinary Institute of America, also operates S.I.'s leading cooking school from the same address. -- Jacob Levich

HORRIBLE

We took our Family to Carol's for a special occasion ,expecting fine dining and was greatly disapointed. The food was adequate, at best, the service was poor and the owners attitude was terrible. Carol thinks she is the end all in culinary but she is not. If a customer is not happy with a dish the owner should offer to bring over another dish and not take an attitude that this is how she prepares a dish (the server never explained that the entree was a cold dish). The server also forgot to serve the soup after my friend asked twice for it - she then had to take it to go. We did not want to make a fuss and further ruin our guests night so we were polite. We will never dine here or recommend this restaurant to anyone again. When I go to a restaurant and I dine at many NYC fine restaurants I except hospitality. Save your money go to NYC and you will fine excellent food and great service.

Don't be left out!

I had the pleasure of dining at Carol's this evening with my family and friends, and it was indescribable! There was a prix-fixe menu for $21.95 that was to die for. The appetizer was an Apple and Crisp Green Salad with Walnut Vinaigrette. Heaven! The first course was a new dish that Carol tried on us, which was fettuccine with tomatoes, basil, and crisp bread crumbs. Extremely light and healthy. All fresh ingredients. This dish is served room temperature. There was a choice between braised chicken with sherry vinegar, or tuna steak au poivre with dipping sauce. 5 of us had the chicken. Cooked exact, and the flavor was excellent. There were carrots, (like candy), and mashed potatoes. The dinner was topped off with a piece of Peaches and Berry Butter Cake, (raspberries, blueberries, etc). and fresh made cream. There was plenty to eat, and the service was great. We also ordered the Chocolate Souffle of the day (for 2). MMMMM!! It was my first time there, but not my last. I highly recommend it. Carol came out and spoke with her diners, and asked for our comments. You don't want to be left out - try it. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised, and will want to go back, again and again.
