Elegance was the art of the day in turn-of-the-century New York (you know, the other century), and Country seeks to invoke the oak-paneled, heavy-leather class of the era in a two-story space in the Carleton on Madison Hotel. The style-child of chef/owner Geoffrey Zakarian, owner of the acclaimed Town, Country had a head start in the design department, with an original hand-laid mosaic tile floor from the 1920s, as well as a Tiffany glass dome in the center of the second-floor main dining room, now both meticulously restored. Country takes the unusual approach of serving a set menu, which changes every two weeks. Guests leave the entire meal, from hors d'oeuvres to dessert, up to the kitchen headed by Alain Ducasse protege Doug Psaltis. Courses are served on huge platters family-style, with the added flash of tableside preparation for a homey touch (from a really, really nice home). The downstairs cafe is imbued with a more casual version of that elegance, and even exhibits it in the AM with breakfast selections like French toast stuffed with fig jam and hazelnut butter. No matter the hour, Country shows its hospitality in grand style.

Delicious

Went to Country for an early breakfast last week with my mom and it was great experience. The ambiance of the Cafe was nice with a casual but elegant style. You are first greeted by a friendly hostess that seats you and then taken care of the entire time you dine with friendly coffee servers and gracious waiters. It was difficult for me to choice between the dishes on the menu because I wanted to try everything but my choices were a hit. I personally loved the old time milk jug filled with warm milk when you order tea and I highly recommend their stuffed French toast with blueberry jam and hazelnut butter (MMMMMM). My mom had the Eggs Benedict and she raved about it the whole way home. Another favorite choice was the Buttermilk Pancakes made with almond flour, apple butter and walnut syrup. This syrup had to be the best I ever tasted and for someone who doesn't like pancakes my mom ate half my order. I would most definitely come back to dine at Country again. Whether I'm in the mood for their Omelet of the Day, French Toast or even just coffee and a pastry I know I will have a great dining experience here with such a great staff and delicious food.

Mmm.. For Brunch and dinner!

4 words... hazelnut.. stuffed.. french.. toast!!! I've been to brunch at Country twice, once with a hangover and once with family. The day I was hungover, I had a perfectly-spiced bloody mary & the aforementioned french toast, and I recommend it to everyone as the hangover panacea. I left feeling much better :) With family, I had a more health-conscious strawberry smoothie and the salmon eggs benedict.. Everything was perfectly cooked, our server was attentive without lurking, and I cannot wait to go back! 5 stars from me!
