Rate and Write a Review Elegance was the art of the day in turn-of-the-century New York (you know, the other century), and Country seeks to invoke the oak-paneled, heavy-leather class of the era in a two-story space in the Carleton on Madison Hotel. The style-child of chef/owner Geoffrey Zakarian, owner of the acclaimed Town, Country had a head start in the design department, with an original hand-laid mosaic tile floor from the 1920s, as well as a Tiffany glass dome in the center of the second-floor main dining room, now both meticulously restored. Country takes the unusual approach of serving a set menu, which changes every two weeks. Guests leave the entire meal, from hors d'oeuvres to dessert, up to the kitchen headed by Alain Ducasse protege Doug Psaltis. Courses are served on huge platters family-style, with the added flash of tableside preparation for a homey touch (from a really, really nice home). The downstairs cafe is imbued with a more casual version of that elegance, and even exhibits it in the AM with breakfast selections like French toast stuffed with fig jam and hazelnut butter. No matter the hour, Country shows its hospitality in grand style.
