Esca is a Southern Italian Seafood Restaurant created by Mario Batali, Joseph Bastianich & David Pasternack. Esca showcases the style & sensibility of Italian coastal cooking. Dave went to Italy & saw firsthand what they were talking about. After years of cooking French food, Dave had finally found the food he had always wanted to cook. The best fish available, prepared in a simple & delicious way. In Italy that means the local catch, but in New York that means the best fish of the Pacific, Mediterranean & our own backyard. At Esca you can eat the most sought after Pacific Ocean delicacies along side Fluke that Dave caught on his day off. The menu changes daily & is driven by the fish markets of the world & the farms of Dave?s friends. Esca is the place where you can have stunning raw fish, an incredible bowl of pasta & then a Mediterranean Branzino cooked in sea salt. Esca is the best of Italian coastal cooking with access to the world?s greatest fish.

Panettone Not Pannettone
By cucci22 on 06/28/2006
In an upscale Italian restaurant they should at minimum know how to spell in Italian. So please correct your menu because Panettone is spelled with one N not two. Also , panettone is a typical dessert from Milan ,the Lombardia region, and I have never ever heard of Sicilian Panettone in Italy.

STAY AWAY!

During the past few years I have visited ESCA a number of times. We have had poor expirences the two recent times we were there for dinner. Recently my wife and I were there to celebrate our 25th Wedding Aniversary. We were extremely disappointed with both the food and the service. We went to the restaurant with the thought of having a romantic meal. Well we were very disappointed. Instead of listening to soft background music we were forced to sit and listen to hard rock music ala Pink Floyd. This is not the atmosphere that calls for Pink Floyd. Neighboring tables as well as ours asked the waiter and maitre D a number of times to turn down the volume. Our complaints fell on deaf ears. Our waiter had an attitude from the very start of the dinner because we did not order bottled water. There was absoluely nothing to write home about with regards to the food. The food was fair but not an of an elite quality that a Mario Bataili restaurant should serve. We were particularly upset that our waiter was inatentitive to making sure that our wine glasses were refilled. Upon completing our main course our waiter finally returned to refill our wine glasses. A little bit to late. There was still a half bottle of wine left. It would have been nice to drink the wine during our dinner not after. After reading this review I think it is safe to say that we did not enjoy ourselves. What a way to top off a 25th aviversary. Stay away!
