It's no surprise that this Upper West Side dive, basically an indoor hot dog stand, has been packing them in since the 1970s. Its prices are still circa the 1970s. There's really only one reason to come here: cheap hot dogs, round-the-clock. At just over a dollar, the broiled or grilled beef hot dogs are the best value in town, especially when you add on sauerkraut, onions, mustard and other accoutrements. What makes it even more unique is that everyone washes it down with a tropical drink -- like pina colada or papaya juice. The decor is more 'gray' than 'papaya' and about as inspiring as a tire iron -- grungy and neglected. Many connoisseurs of the beef dog swear by Gray's (or swear when they can't get Gray's), but even occasional users can appreciate the Recession Special -- two dogs, one drink: $3.50.

The hots dogs aren't out-of-this-world, but they are so freakin cheap, who cares! :-) My family of three ate there for $10! You can't go wrong with that. Especially in NYC. Grab the family, or your special someone and go to Gray's for a tasty cheap date!

The Fliet Mingion of Hot Dogs
By lawtalk2 on 02/22/2007
There is no better place to find the character of NYC than Grey's Papaya. The smell of the dogs, the people waiting on line, the hot special mustard and the cheap prices. Day or night. But please, do not foeget Papaya King the supposedly unrelated, but identical counterpart on 86th & Third. Those East Siders need to eat as well. The casings are hard, the meat spicy adn the thrill is when you bit into the hotdog and those spicy juices pour out and burn your tounge. Deal with it, like a Red Badge of Courage!
