Simply put, a New York meal without Katz's is like a corned beef sandwich without the corned beef. Arguably the classic of all classic New York Jewish-style delicatessens, Katz's has remained virtually unchanged since its inception in 1888. The vintage joint is one massive tin and aluminum space, sort of a minimalist-Berlin-immigrant-grunge-chic in what used to be the quintessentially ethnic Lower East Side. Leave your pretension at the door, grab a paper counter ticket and head straight for the cafeteria-style servers. The food is traditional kosher-style, and anyone who's anyone (including former presidents, movie stars, foreign diplomats and neighborhood natives) usually orders a piled-high deli sandwich. Lean pastrami, brisket and hot dogs are of the highest order, and the corned beef -- cured, slow-dried over 30 days and hand-sliced -- is so luscious it'll make you convert religions. -- Yon Motskin

Not the same,But there is hope!!!!!!!!!
By YOSFAM on 01/23/2009
Despite all the great reviews. I been eating at Katz's deli since I was a kid in the early 60's. Things have changed drastically.I know it is nice to have one of the last of the original delis surviving on lower east side,But I can surely tell you its no Katz's that I grew up with. I was extremely dissapointed twice in there quality of food ( The meat was very fatty and stringy) and believe me I should know my father delivered the meat to them for many years through the 60's and 70's.I hope this gets back to the owners, Because maybe they will look into whats been going wrong and make things better. The countermen have no personality. Years ago, the countermen were alot better, not perfect I asure you, But at least they gave you a run for the money and a joke as well.I hope this institution stays around for a long time, But they have some sole searching to do to bring back to what it once was. For todays new customers , they just don't know the way things were. Quite a few are out of towners who never grew up in this great city and experienced the days of all the delis of the lower east side .Please MR.Katz don't take this badly, just work it out ,I know with a little attention things will be ok . Buy the way, The frence fries are still great!

She WAS having an orgasm! Only it was from eating the pastrami!! What can you say about a place thats better than sex?? A classic example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Just simply, the best!

Killed more Jews than Hitler

To die for!! Just heaven on earth.. I' ve been going to Katz before I could walk or talk. I remember when the countermen spoke yiddish and did not have to write with a grease pencil on the back of the meal ticket because a sandwich than was less than a $1.00...Nothing has changed except for the price and the ethnicticity of the personel. My father was a WWII vet and use to tell me stories of how my grandmother would send him when he was in the service, whiskey in a pickle jar and a hard salami from katz Every hing is great from the kasha kinishes to the Dr. Browns Cel-Ray soda. Really what else is there to live for!!!!
