Simply put, a New York meal without Katz's is like a corned beef sandwich without the corned beef. Arguably the classic of all classic New York Jewish-style delicatessens, Katz's has remained virtually unchanged since its inception in 1888. The vintage joint is one massive tin and aluminum space, sort of a minimalist-Berlin-immigrant-grunge-chic in what used to be the quintessentially ethnic Lower East Side. Leave your pretension at the door, grab a paper counter ticket and head straight for the cafeteria-style servers. The food is traditional kosher-style, and anyone who's anyone (including former presidents, movie stars, foreign diplomats and neighborhood natives) usually orders a piled-high deli sandwich. Lean pastrami, brisket and hot dogs are of the highest order, and the corned beef -- cured, slow-dried over 30 days and hand-sliced -- is so luscious it'll make you convert religions. -- Yon Motskin

Still the greatest
By UBILLUTZ on 11/03/2009
I've been going to Katz's only for 40+ years. The food's as great now as it was the first time. I always got a kick out of the countermen who'd give you a sample as they cut the meat saying, "I give you nice lean meat," hoping for a tip which signs proclaimed was not allowed. Long live Katz's!

Get the real thing while it lasts.

Nothing will ever be the same as when you were a kid...You cannot go home again. However, Katz's is about as good as it gets...there's a glorious burp in every bite. . There are so many so called "delis" in NYC that are not delisat all, they are simply sandwich stores; there is nothing "delicatessen" about them as they all sell the same stuff-Boars Head this and Boar's head that- No Boar's head at Katz's just flavor, flavor and more flavor. I feel sorry for this younger generation because they know only the highly processed salt instead of flavor. Even their potato chips are made from paste and salt;and they are paying top dollar for this crap. The reason I list all of this is because there are sadly so few of the original places left and Katz's is one of them that you should visit before it is gone. Food is so expensive thse days and it will only get worse(have you noticed the shrinking cans and packages in the supermarket. Eventually the wholesale prices will be so high, a sandwich will cost $30.00 then $40.00 then close the door and say goodbye. It's too bad.
