At first glance, you might mistake this joint for a Mexican folk art store, as the windows display Day-of-the-Dead figurines, religious candles and other colorful tchochkies. They're all for sale-at very reasonable prices-but we're happy to report that Kitchen also specializes in fresh-made Mexican food, not to mention every imaginable type of dried Mexican chile. From the hot steamer, pick up fresh tortillas, enchiladas, New Mexico tortilla pie or a bowl of black bean soup with a wedge of Oaxacan blue cornmeal cornbread. You can get burritos either Los Angeles style (with chopped salsa salad) or San Francisco style (with pinto beans and whole-grain rice). And for dessert, there is dense Mexican chocolate bread pudding.
