Morimoto is the New York City interpretation of Executive Chef Masaharu Morimoto?s namesake Philadelphia restaurant that is co-owned with restaurateur Stephen Starr. Designed by world renowned architect Tadao Ando, the restaurant?s entrance features the world?s largest Japanese Noren curtain set against a massive façade of austere steel. Inside is an extraordinary open kitchen surrounded by a 24-seat sushi bar where diners can watch Morimoto and his chefs at work. On every level of the restaurant guests enjoy the elaborate menu where East meets West. Glass partitions create a private atmosphere between tables and a wall made of 17,000 spring water bottles add a touch of New York drama to this tranquil atmosphere. Guests have the option to dine on the top floor or congregate in the lower lounge for cocktails and snacks.

One of the best in the world!
By treesap8 on 02/23/2007
I've been to hundreds of Japanese restaurants all over the world. I've become addicted to sushi and very sensitive to the diferences in quality from one restaurant to another and even within the same restaurant. For me, the search for great sushi is something of a spiritual journey. Many restaurants don't handle the ricemaking well, many don't select the highest quality (not just freshness, but FLAVOR) fish or vegetables and very, very few offer exotic items worthy of tasting. Masa (I am not reviewig Bar Masa) is at the pinnacle of all that is great about Japanese cuisine. You don't go to Masa to have a few pieces of sushi. You go to have a tremendous meal that is at once spiritual, perfect in detail and utterly satisfying. It's always an adventure as you are presented with items that are seldom if ever served at your local sushi bar. Soups, salads, sashimi and sushi are all works of culinary art. Admittedly, you pay for this quality, but it truly delivers! If you are looking for a mindless meal, go elsewhere. But if you love great Japanese food and you want to experience flavors and styles that you have never had before, reserve a seat at the sushi bar one of these nights. You'll be dreaming about it for a long time after.

DON'T BELIEVE ANY OF THE JADED REVIEWS. THE PLACE IS BEAUTIFUL AND THE FOOD FANTASTIC. WAS NOT OVERALL IMPRESSED WITH THE QUALITY OF THE SUSHI, BUT MOST OTHER DISHES ARE OUTSTANDING. TRY THE KOBE RIBEYE FOR A TRULY DECADENT ENTREE. BOTH TIMES I HAVE EATEN THERE I SAT AT SUSHI BAR WHERE YOU WILL BE RUBBING ELBOWS WITH LOTS OF CELEBS!!
