The SceneSince 1972, this unmarked West Village carriage house has been the setting for some of the city's most romantic meals. The sprawling wood bar, with its blazing fireplaces and a baby grand piano, looks out over a candlelit dining room and formal balcony, where tuxedoed servers pamper the special-occasion crowds with requisite pomp and pretense. The FoodIn recent years, the continental three-course prix fixe has morphed into an exciting--and as expected, indulgent--internationally inspired menu. Start with puffy goat-cheese gnocchi napped in black-truffle butter, pancetta and sweet roasted onions, or pastry-topped seafood gumbo served with aromatic homemade breads. Rosy, sage-streaked duck breast pairs nicely with crispy confit, braised chanterelles and acorn-squash spaetzle, and the signature beef Wellington--a gigantic, buttery seared fillet slathered with foie gras and baked in pastry--is better than ever. The towering chocolate souffle, intensely flavored and light as air, is exemplary.

NOT SO ROMANTIC AS THEY SAY!
By qtnsxynurse on 11/26/2007
BEING TOLD AND READ THAT THIS IS THE MOST ROMANTIC RESTAURANT IN NEW YORK I CALLED UP TO SEE IF THEY HAVE OPEN RESERVATION ON THE SAME DAY I CALLED (3 HRS PRIOR) AND LUCKILY THEY HAVE OPEN TABLE AT 6PM. IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL OCCASION (ENGAGEMENT) SO MY GIRLFRIEND AND I THOUGHT THIS WILL BE JUST THE PLACE. WE GOT THERE 10 MINUTES EARLY BUT WAS SEATED RIGHT AWAY. THE TABLE I REQUESTED WAS WITH LITTLE PRIVACY AND LITTLE ROMANTIC, INDEED, WE WERE SEATED PER OUR REQUEST. WE CHECKED OUT THE MENU, WINE BY THE GLASS WAS NOT MUCH TO LOOKED AT. WE ORDERED THE PRE FIXE FOR $75.00, THE FOOD WAS GOOD, BUT THIS IS NO ROMANTIC PLACE TO CELEBRATE SOMETHING SPECIAL. BEHIND US WAS THE BIG ROUND TABLE WHERE THEY SEATED A HUGE FAMILY WITH KIDS (SO AS YOU CAN TELL BY THAT THE LOUDNESS OF THESE FAMILY). WILL NOT RECOMMEND AND WILL NOT RETURN EVEN FOR FREE.

Granted it was restaurant week but they were out of the wine we ordered, food was ordinary and came out cold, furnishing have seen better days.

A real pleasure
By stntmath on 03/30/2007
Anyone who finds fault with this place should get over themselves. They're probably real complainers about everything else in their lives also. Negative. The place is good but don't cry about it if you don't get in. It's not that good.
