The SceneSince 1972, this unmarked West Village carriage house has been the setting for some of the city's most romantic meals. The sprawling wood bar, with its blazing fireplaces and a baby grand piano, looks out over a candlelit dining room and formal balcony, where tuxedoed servers pamper the special-occasion crowds with requisite pomp and pretense. The FoodIn recent years, the continental three-course prix fixe has morphed into an exciting--and as expected, indulgent--internationally inspired menu. Start with puffy goat-cheese gnocchi napped in black-truffle butter, pancetta and sweet roasted onions, or pastry-topped seafood gumbo served with aromatic homemade breads. Rosy, sage-streaked duck breast pairs nicely with crispy confit, braised chanterelles and acorn-squash spaetzle, and the signature beef Wellington--a gigantic, buttery seared fillet slathered with foie gras and baked in pastry--is better than ever. The towering chocolate souffle, intensely flavored and light as air, is exemplary.

i'm sorry this place is OVERRATED. the fireplace is by the front door and unless you sit at the bar you don't even see it. The garden may be nice in the summer but the windows in winter only let in major drafts and left us freezing. Not the best service either. No one heard our complaint about being cold and I saw two tables get up and move because of it. The food selection was awful unless you like seafood. THE ONLY appetizer on the prix fix (all they offered) was a boring salad of mesclun greens. Way to go chef. Overall very disappointed not romanitic at all, and the food was a major let down.

New Year's Eve dinner was one of the most incredible experiences of my life at One If By Land. The food was marvelous starting with the all seafood apprtizer buffet, caviar, lobster tails, shimp, oysters, all the champage and seven wonderful courses including the phenomemal beef wellington. A first rate dance band. The service and choice of wines were impeccable. We can't wait to go again.

Went here for my Husband's 40th Birthday and it was a waste. If you like small portions and high prices then this place is for you. The decor is very nice but the service and the food was lacking, especially for a place that charges so much., it’s WAY OVER PRICED especially at the bar.

I won't bother wasting my time repeating the same things that most of the listings have said already. Just to say that I took my daughter for her birthday, oh was I embarrassed. they have. REAL ATTITUDE FROM THE SERVER. And a bad attitude from the host.
