The SceneThe white-washed interior of the bi-level space feels like an exclusive beachside hacienda, especially in the second-floor dining room, which always seems filled with light. Palm trees sculpted onto the walls, lazy fronds spinning from the tall, angled ceiling and arched doors leading to an outdoor terrace add to the "on-vacation" vibe for a mix of midtown suits and funkier food lovers. The FoodChef-owner Richard Sandoval applies his chile collection so skillfully that he never masks the essential flavors of each fish. An improbably delicate chipotle and manchego cheese sauce gracefully embraces shrimp and bay scallops, and refreshing cubes of salmon tread above the citrus-habanero sting in the ceviche marinade. Whole red snapper arrives like a seafood sculpture, artfully de-boned, rounded out, stuffed with tangy cactus salad and surrounded with a chile de arbol lake. But most impressive is crispy, guajillo-enhanced pan-seared pampano, which is worthy of the restaurant's good name.

The waiter said the special was camarones with asparagus, so my wife ordered it, and it came without the asparagus. The excuse: "We're out of asparagus." This at 8:30 on a Saturday night. So why didn't the waiter come back and tell us? The appetizers were good, but at these prices the entrees should have been better, and the service definitely should have. I still think Rosa Mexicano is way above this place for Mexican food.

egnnyc: Former incarnations may play to rumor mill, but newest version("pampano, modern mexican seafood" [not "pompano"; confusing spelling is reason why we could not get phone number/address from tel. information] which just opened two weeks ago features mexican chic seafood (and other foods) menu & appealing drinks to attract hot crowd with friendly, quick service & deep pockets. Bill for one cocktail, two Mexican beers, two appetizers & two entrees with tax & tip was $111.00, perhaps expensive for Mexican, but not for "in" crowd who we saw packing the "new" midtown Manhattan restaurant with very tasty, very different Mexican food. Try to get a second floor table, which has a Malibu, Calif. feeling, and be sure to make reservations.
