Perhaps the most brightly lit steak house in history, Peter Luger is happy to let you see its cooked-to-perfection steaks in the best light imaginable. Rated the number one steak in NYC by Zagat readers 17 years in a row, this Williamsburg stalwart is always crowded, doesn't take any credit cards but its own, has all the ambiance of a German beer hall, and boasts a waitstaff more cantankerous than Archie Bunker. But that's why you love it, because out of all that comes the most amazing meat: buttery, a soft juicy pink on the inside, charred black on the outside, tender and marbled to perfection. Order the porterhouse for two (or three or four), and you can't go wrong at this bastion of Brooklyn beef. The juicy, tasty burgers are renown too -- not surprising since they come from the same source as the steaks. The portions run from massive to elephantine, from the tomato and onion salad, composed of red and white medallions whose diameter is almost that of a Frisbee, to the mountains of creamed spinach and fried potatoes. And of course, here you can get an appetizer of bacon -- just bacon, slabs of it on a plate. -- Erin Franzman

Steaklover's dream
By tlaw022 on 04/22/2002
If you love steak, you gotta love this place. Old fashioned steakhouse atmoshpere. Unlike most people, I prefer the steak sauce on seafood. Great on lobster tails. The steaks are unbelievable. It melts in your mouth. Which goes for the creamed spinach as well. The bartender is first class. Wonderful martinis. The only knock is if you like different cuts of the steak. they only serve the porterhouse, but it's first class.

Take the J train
By jhmiyares8 on 05/23/2002
Agree with all the other reviews with respect to the Steak. It is fabulous. A hint, don't ask to look at a menu, you get the same look that you get in France if you ask them to bring catsup to the table. Also, to really get into the feel , take the J subway line (Old BMT that crosses Williamsburg bridge) and walk to the place. Yeah, alittle dangerous, but you get the feeling you are being transported back to the turn of last century. Try the pecan pie for dessert. Fabulous!

reservations

We called today to make reservations and the man on the phone was the most rude person in NYC. We are not going there because of him. We will go somewhere that has a courteous staff.
