Pylos, a pretty little town on the coast of Greece, is a place that exudes old-world charm and pours its wine freely. This namesake restaurant in the East Village stays true to its roots with rustic Greek home cooking and a special marble-topped wine bar (only Greek wines make the list). Clusters of clay pots hang from the ceiling over a linear line of tables, one side outfitted with chairs, the other with a long, contiguous cream couch, promoting a laid back, friendly energy. Hot and cold mezethes (appetizers) are served like tzatziki (a garlicky yogurt cucumber spread) and keftedes (fried meatballs seasoned with mint). The classic Greek salad comes topped with stuffed grape leaves, and clay-baked dishes like mousaka and paidakia round out the menu. When find out that Diane Kochilas, award-winning Greek cookbook writer and universally respected authority on the cuisine, has her hand in the pot as consulting chef, all bodes well for an enjoyable, authentic meal. -- Ashley Lederer

my family and I have no problem driving down from Westchester for a delicious meal at Pylos. the food the wine the service is excellent. We even find this a good 1/2 meeting with our friends from Jerey. I always get the pastichio which is the best I have had. Great prices for all.

My friend and I stumbled upon this restaurant last night and were lured in by the amazingly inviting and cozy decor. Our waiter suggested a fantastic Greek wine that was far less expensive then we were willing to spend. My lady-friend had the Mediterranean sea bass special and I had the clay baked chicken in red sauce. Both dishes were wonderfully aeromatic and had that very non-generic home cooked taste and presentation. The atmosphere was fantastic and the service friendly and excellent. Our waiter complemented our meal with a traditional liquor that tasted like peaches and a pair of Camel Lights. In traditional homestyle fashion, we had to smoke them in the front yard. Job well done and we wish PYLOS many years of fantastic homestyle cooking in Manhattan. We will be back soon and often!

FINALLY, they've reopened! My wife and I ate at this restaurant when it was called It's Greek To Me. We attempted to visit again soon thereafter only to see that they were renovating. So it was with great anticipation that we recently visited Pylos (as it is now called) 2 days after they reopened. I'm pleased to say that it was well worth the wait. While the menu is geared more toward rustic Greek cooking than it had been, the owner's have made sure to continue offering such classics as their amazing grilled octopus (albeit as an appetizer) and their equally amazing fried eggplant and zucchini appetizer. They've also added a wonderful dip and warm pita triangles (gratis) to get you in the mood. If you're willing to take a recommendation and try one of the specials or clay-pot dishes, you'll feel as if you've been transported to rural Greece. And you won't soon want to return. The new space looks wonderful and the staff, including the owner, are friendly and helpful. I'm going there again tonight.
