Rate and Write a Review Like Israel, the country whose national sandwiches this restaurant models its own after, everyone wants a piece of tiny Rainbow Falafel. It's often cited as the top falafel joint in the city, even though rival Mamoun's may go up in arms if you mention that anywhere near MacDougal Street. For the uninitiated, falafel actually refers to the fried vegetarian brown balls made from chick peas, garlic, onion and spices that make up the sandwich, usually in a pita and lopped with tomato, hummus, yogurt and lettuce. Other than that there are some sides, like grape leaves, baba ghanouj, tahini and eggplant salad. No alcohol, but Turkish coffee provides plenty of jolt for a midday pick-me-up or post-work second wind. It's not so much that there's no decor as there's no room for decor, since this sit-down shop is so small some diners say there's barely even room to stand. Which is fine, considering most people grab takeout and use nearby Union Square as a pleasant proxy outdoor patio.
