Sparks gets a bad rap arising from the 1985 murder of mafia chieftain Paul Castellano as he exited the Midtown steakhouse. This bit of lowlife lore gives the impression that Sparks is some kind of joint, frequented by demimondaine characters. But Castellano was an upscale mobster who did his best to disassociate himself from the homespun trappings of his felonious forebears. Sparks fit the bill nicely -- the walls are brimming with oil paintings, the leather dining chairs are stately and accommodating and the wainscoting might well have been donated by the Third Earl of Leicester. In a word: class. It's also a pricey spot, with many entrees just south of $40. This is not a place to count your change, or your calories. A typical meal might include a mouth-watering order of shrimp cocktail, a tomato-and-onion salad and a thick, marbled cut of sirloin, followed by brandy, cigars and some discreet defibrillation. The steaks don't miss -- Sparks is up there with Peter Luger, Keen's and anyone else who puts heat to meat.

Worst meal ever in a steakhouse
By PTALNYC on 12/22/2008
I had the worst steak ever that I've had at a New York steakhouse at New York steakhouse prices at Sparks, and I haven't been back since. In 1999, six of us had finished a business meeting and, to soothe any roughened egos, I took my customer, an executive from a major insurance company and his two assistants, the sales representative from my company and the head of the division to lunch at Sparks. We had made reservations at 1:30PM. It was not crowded. I have no idea whether or not the fact that the customer was an African American triggered the horrible service and absolutely inedible steaks, or whether Sparks simply didn't give a damn. But the long, slow, drawn out service ended in cold, tough steaks. I believe that the management and servers were sending a message. I should have taken the hint when they put us way in the back of an empty dining room. I originally thought it was because we were a table of six. A $400 tab, my customer treated the poor food and service with good grace, and I became an outraged customer of Sparks. Sparks had been recommended by my salesman. I had no idea if he had ever been there before, as this was the first time we had taken the newly promoted customer out to lunch at a restaurant within walking distance from the customer's office. Terrible, terrible experience. I haven't been back since.
